DEFENDING RESPONSIBLE MINING

Situation

One of the world’s largest producers of precious stones became the subject of a damaging news media investigation that included false allegations of unethical conduct at a major mine in a large African country.

Approach

CLP Strategies first conducted exhaustive reputational due diligence to understand the allegations’ origin and verify all the facts. Once we could prove the reports were false, we spearheaded a legal outreach to media to correct inaccuracies and obtain on-the-record corrections. The campaign included developing a thorough dossier on the company’s safety, environmental and community-related practices for distribution to accountable reporters, their editors, senior management, and legal counsel.

Results:

High profile, inaccurate articles appearing around the world were removed or corrected by the publishers.  After our formal protest to the national press ombudsman in a one jurisdiction, a newspaper was forced to issue an official apology and publish a detailed correction.  Elsewhere, material portraying the company in a negative light was consistently challenged and eventually either removed or mediated in text.
